OUR AESTHETIC PHILOSOPHY
 

Shoreditch is a vibrant, multicultural community in East London where many young artists, art spaces, and design firms find their homes. Located in the Shoreditch community, Fangcun Gégend aims to provide a rich and diverse cultural experience and creative inspiration to people including but not limited to local residents and artists, building an ideal place for relaxation, collaboration, and creation.

‘Fāngcùn’ (方寸), the Chinese expression for ‘a square inch’, refers to the minimal place for individual existence and the basic unit in our perception of space. ‘Gégend’, the German word meaning ‘neighborhood’ and ‘area’, aptly complements the concept of fangcun by conveying our fundamental relationship with the surrounding world. Deriving its name from the cultural resonance between East and West, Fangcun Gégend is dedicated to realizing the essence of this resonance: connecting individuals with the world right in the neighborhood.

As a multifunctional and multi-scenario space for artistic activities, Fangcun Gégend features Chinese aesthetics and tea culture and centres on the concept of open space to derive the unlimited possibilities of art. We regularly host a wide range of art events and invite young artists and artisans around the world to arrange exhibitions of handmade tea wares, flower wares, sculptures, installation artworks and other artifacts of Eastern Asian styles.

Fangcun Gégend makes everything possible. Our space is designed for infinite potentials and provides a concrete setting for a wide range of activities without thematic restrictions. Artists from all backgrounds are welcome to arrange exhibitions of painting and/or photography here. We organize cultural events such as tea gatherings, meditation sessions, book sharings, and film screenings. Addressing ourselves to satisfy community needs for cultural exchange and social gatherings, Fangcun Gégend is a diverse and creative cultural space uniquely rooted in the Shoreditch locality while maintaining global connectivity.

An unoccupied heart is a square inch without boundary, yet vaster than the whole world. The heart can encompass the universe within a square inch, embracing infinite possibilities with subtle curiosity. A kind and caring regard deep from one’s heart can reach the entire world of beings. Expecting the joining of genuine hearts and souls, a small space like ours can unfold the immensity of imagination. At Fangcun Gégend, we explore the vastness between heaven and earth, encounter myriad lives and lifestyles, and ultimately, find our true selves.

Everyone lives in their own ‘square inch’, and London, where we live together, is but a ‘square inch’ of our planet. In these square inches, we find the worlds of ourselves. Buddhism believes that a flower can embody the changes of the Universe. So do we cherish our bodies as the incarnation of countless transformations of life’s journey. Fangcun Gégend is a living space that embraces the infinitude of life. We invite everyone to unleash their creativity, explore the fluidity of identity and consciousness, and experience life’s continuum in this flowing journey.
